We Can Do Hard Things
Glennon Doyle
When I had first heard of Glennon it was from my faith community, but it was critique. I had heard opinions that her most recent book, Untamed, wasn’t Christian enough. It was ‘too much of her personal truth’ and ‘not enough gospel’. I agreed without thinking at first, figuring those opinions must be true. A few months later I had a friend (from growing up/outside my young life community lol) recommend the book, saying that she loved Doyle’s perspective on faith and that I might like her style. Glennon’s beautiful story of coming into her own queerness and unpacking what she had been taught about God tracked so hard with me. She talks about a God of love and freedom, a God without male pronouns (or pronouns at all). This definitely isn’t the deepest book ever, but it was the first piece that made me consider that maybe my God wasn’t just okay with queerness, my God celebrates with joy over people fully coming into who they are. But back to the podcast rec, We Can Do Hard Things is a continuation of Glennon’s mind and story. I feel like I know her and her wife Abby, and that they’re rooting for me in whatever my faith journey looks like.
